There comes a point in one’s life, where you take a step back and reevaluate your priorities. It may be about saving for retirement or doing something meaningful for yourself, focusing more on family or taking a look at your job and thinking what else? During and post pandemic, there was an emphasis on taking stock and looking at your career differently. Some continue to say “I am looking for jobs with more flexibility.” There is more to life than work. I want to travel more, spend more time with the people I care about and not be consumed by my work. I have pride in my work but I also want more.

It is All About Perspective 

Some might say we lost something here; others say their eyes are finally open. Whatever side you end up on the debate, you are in control of setting your career goals and what you want that to look like. Some might want more flexibility now, others may say I am going to make as much money as I can now, so I can fulfill my bucket list later.

Good News About Jobs with More Flexibility

The good news is the job market has been shifting for a few years now and there are jobs with more flexibility. There’s a mix of remote roles, hybrid roles and companies that have shifted back to bring everyone into the office. It is certainly a mixed bag so to speak. If you search for a more flexible role, you will likely find one. Think about your objective. Do you want to live abroad for a period of time and work remotely or part time? Or are you comfortable with a job that has a more generous vacation policy and 9 to 5 hours? 

Polish Up Your Resume 

So, if you are moving in a different direction, you will need to polish up your resume. Resumes should be optimized based on the particular role you are seeking as a job candidate. If you are looking for remote job, target your search in that direction. Evaluate whether or not it is realistic to find a remote job in your field. If not, you may have to pivot to find an opportunity for your skill set that may differ from what you are doing now. 

Setting Your Priorities

If you are looking for an opportunity that gives you more flexibility and balance, you may have to give up something. Are you open to a lower compensation if it allows you to do some of the other things you desire? You want to determine your priorities so when you conduct your search, it is based on meeting your objectives. With any job search, you don’t get everything you want but if you prioritize, you have a good sense of what you want most in this job. It allows you to set realistic expectations. You will be happier for it when the time comes.

People are shifting priorities, some want more family time, some want to see the world. Decide what will make you happy, make a realistic plan and take action.
